Socially Speaking
It's always nice to hear about someone who grew up here in town and is now living in another place, but still thinking about their life in Garden City. We heard from Jane O'Connor, who is married and living in upstate New York. Jane graduated from Garden City High where she sang in the Choral Group and was said by all to have a lovely voice. She and her husband are active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in their town and Jane sings our National Anthem at the Veterans State Conventions just as she heard it sung while living in town by the mother of one of her friends. While living elsewhere, she feels she is carrying on a tradition learned right here in town. Good for you Jane and thank your for remembering us. Last week's musical tribute to Rosemary Clooney was a great success at the G.C. Library and it had many of those who attended singing along with the performers. Among those were Lucille Tilitz, Julie Fehler, Jackie West, Les Schnell and Art Boddiker. What a great way to spend a Winter afternoon. Since it will be Spring by the time you read this - it comes in on March 20 th, you just might want to save Sunday, March 30 th for Clark Bontanic Gardens. They will be offering a program on "Waking Up The Garden" by Jenny Ulsheimer at 1:30 p.m. Jenny is the Director of Horticulture at the Garden and she will lead you on a walk around the garden while she demonstrates pruning techniques, division and seed propagation, mulching and general garden care. The program will be held mostly outdoors so dress accordingly. Refreshments will be served and there is no fee for the event. Another good way to spend a day learning something new and if your have never gotten around to visiting Clark Gardens this is a wonderful introduction to a wonderful place to not only learn things, but to enjoy it too. Happy Birthday wishes go to John Christie, who will do his celebrating on March 26 th and to Pat Sheehan, who will do likewise on March 28 th. May you both have a wonderful day, a great year ahead and with many more Birthdays in your future in which to enjoy health and happiness. The folks at the Garden City League for Helen Keller Services for the Blind are asking that you save the date of Thursday, April 17 th for their Spring Dessert, Card and Games Party. It will be held at the Garden City Community Church from noon to 4 p.m. Reservations in the amount of $12 per person will be taken by Mrs. Aurora Vinciguarra at 85 Hayes Street, Garden City, N.Y. 11530. There will be Table Prizes and Boutique Tables for your Spring Shopping experience. The Co-Chairladies are Ann Wassmer and Aurora Annunziato. If you can't attend they would appreciate a donation to that very worthy cause. Speaking of Bridges, as we usually do here in town, Carole Rilling and Diane Wall have come up with a novel way of holding the Social Bridge for the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. They usually meet at homes with a bring your sandwich and dessert and beverage are served. However, on Monday, March 31 st, they will meet for lunch at Grimaldi's Restaurant on Franklin Avenue, have their lunch there and then have their usual three tables of bridge in play right there in the restaurant. Boy, are they springing into Spring and good for them. And now, I would like to share with you a poem written by Elfin Snyder, a G.C. resident who passed away not too long ago. As Easter heralds one more Spring A choir of birds are on the Wing And Daffodils all nod to say, We wish you all A Happy Day. And I do too. See you next week.
