Historical Society Calls On Student Artists

Callie and Brendan Coors accept their awards as winners in The Garden City Historical Society's 2007 Children's Art Contest.
The Garden City Historical Society announces its third annual Juried Art Contest, "Architecture of Garden City". We invite students in grades kindergarten through 12 who reside in Garden City to participate. All submissions must illustrate an architectural feature of a residential or non-residential structure located in the Village of Garden City. Drawings must be created in pencil, color pencil, or pen and ink, and artwork must not exceed 18 by 24 inches, including mat. For high school students only (grades 9-12), we will again have a photography/computer graphics category. The deadline for all submissions is March 14, 2008.

There's quite an assortment of architectural features to choose from, among them, porches, roof lines, decorative windows, detailed woodwork...let your imaginations lead you.

The contest has four art categories: K-1, Grades 2 through 5, Middle School, and High School. Photography/computer graphics will be a separate category for high school students only. The contest will be judged by local residents with art backgrounds. Awards will be presented to First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention winners in each category.

The Historical Society will host a reception for the winning artists and their families on Sunday, April 6, at The Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street. Awards will be presented at that time. A Children's Art Exhibit including all entries will be open to the public at the Museum on Saturdays, April 5 and 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays, April 6 and 13, from noon to 3 p.m.

For further information and a permission form, or to arrange for submission of artwork, please contact Mary Jane Caldwell, education committee chairperson, at 516-248-5917.
