Club Presents Book Reviews

"The right book at the right time can ignite a lifelong habit."

With this quotation from the New York Times, the panel moderator opened the annual Book Review program at the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead on Wednesday, January 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Casino.

Betty Pupke was the first reviewer. She discussed "Pompeii" by Robert Harris, 'The Last Templar" by Raymond Khoury and "Seven Types of Ambiguity" by Elliot Perlman.

She was followed by Marie Scott's analysis of "Agent Zigzag," by Ben MacIntyre and "The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court" by Jeffrey Tobin.

Next came Marjorie Maher who spoke about three books: "Marley and Me," by John Grogan, "It Takes A Dog to Raise a Village; short stories compiled by the actress Ruth Gordon and "Good Dog Stay" by Anna Quindlen.

Bea Mercadante, the last reviewer, chose "The Clarks of Cooperstown by Nicholas Fox Weber, the biographies of the founders of the Clark Museum in Williamstown, MA.

The entire program was coordinated by Prem Chauhan, chairperson of the Drama/Literature Department. She was assisted by Muriel Urban (decorations), Ruth Brown and Terri Ferrari (door), Florence Freda, (guests) and Ida and Jennie Catania (hospitality). Pourers of the day were Lillian LaPlac and Shella Birkenstock.

Residents who wish to join the Community Club may obtain information by calling the club at 746-0488 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
