Harlem Wizards Fundraiser A Success

A sell-out crowd enjoys a spirited version of "YMCA"
Eleven hundred excited spectators filled the stands in the high school gym to capacity on Saturday, February 2nd to watch a team of district teachers challenge the Harlem Wizards in a fun-filled day of basketball and entertainment. The Wizards dazzled their opponents and fans alike with a variety of basketball skills and comic antics. The teachers kept the score close all game, much to the delight of the hundreds of their students cheering them on.

The event was sponsored by the Garden City Student Aid and Scholarship Fund, a non-profit, charitable organization that provides loans, scholarships and awards to Garden City High School seniors. The success of this fundraiser will enable the organization to increase its support of our students.

During the event, Fund members and volunteers staffed refreshment, souvenir and raffle stands, which were busy throughout the day. Following the game, the Wizards' players patiently signed autographs for anyone and everyone who sought them out.

The Garden City Student Aid and Scholarship Fund would like to thank: D&J Refreshments and SportsLoft for their generous support of the event; the adult and student volunteers who assisted the Fund's directors with concession, souvenir and raffle sales; the High School administration, custodial and cafeteria staffs for their assistance before, during and after the event; the teachers who played in the game and encouraged their students to come and root them on; Newsphoto for photographing the day's activities; and the community's residents who came out in force to watch the event and make it a memorable day for all.
