K of C Free-Throw Championship "Jay"Lynch, Chairman of the Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship which will be held from 1 to 3 P.M. on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3 in St. Anne's McCloskey Auditorium, New Hyde Park Road and Dartmouth St. has some advice for local New York Giants football fans. "Stop speculating on the condition of Patriots' Tom Brady's ankle and relax with a calming afternoon sports appetizer: watching the remarkable skills of some local boys and girls basketball stars (ages 10 to 14) as they compete in sinking foul shots." The tourney chairman attributes these skills primarily to the fine training from the St. Anne's CYO Basketball program under the direction of Jack Kiley and his associates: Vin Clarke (Boys Division) and Stan Wyremski (Girls Division). The Knights are hoping for the emergence of some new superstars to follow in the sneaker-steps of some past tourney favorites such as Leo Driscoll, Jr. and the Chairman's daughter, Teresa Lynch who dazzled spectators during their competitive years. In 2003, Driscoll won at Council, District, and County championship levels to compete in the New York State finals at West Point. At the Sunday, February 3 session, entrants are required to bring along written parental consent and a photocopy of their birth certificate. Entry forms will be available at the sign-in. Neither cash nor bonds will be awarded at any level of competition in the tourney since that may compromise the status of the contestant. Giants fans, here's some more advice. It's straight from the Nassau- Suffolk CYO: Remember that an athletic event is just a game and not a matter of life and death. The Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship is sponsored by "Msgr. John's Knights." Msgr. John C. Seidenschwang Council, Knights of Columbus, 35 Dartmouth St., Garden City, NY 11530.
