Fatal Fire At Hilton Hall

A small fire in an apartment at Hilton Hall killed Evelyn O'Leary, age 83, on Sunday, January 27th.

A maintenance man, alerted by a neighbor who smelled smoke, entered the apartment and found Mrs. O'Leary and called firefighters. The Garden City Fire Department said firemen encountered heavy smoke in the woman's apartment after they got there just after 3 PM. They said the small fire was extinguished with water and the fire was contained to a table, chair, and wall covering in the kitchen.

The fire was investigated by Garden City Police, Nassau County Homicide detectives and the Arson Squad, but preliminary reports indicate it was not of a suspicious nature.
