The Garden City varsity wrestling team has had a very busy January, including five Conference dual meets and two Tournaments. The wrestlers earned big wins vs Bethpage, Lynbrook and Island Trees, and two tough losses vs Wantagh and Plainedge. Conference 3A is recognized as the black and blue league with the deepest lineup of tough teams, there are no weak teams and no easy matches.
The varsity wrestlers did very well at the Scarsdale and Wheatley tournaments. GC bested 13 other schools from section 1 and NYC to win in Scarsdale. Garden City had 6 individual champions: Joe Barbato, Matt Schmelzinger, Danny Lofrese, Nick Preziosi, Connor Horl, and Spencer DeSena. Mike Lofrese finished 2nd, John Wittman 3rd, James Roth 3rd, and Steve Marino 3rd.
The Wheatley tournament was 13 teams deep and GC finished 2nd. Individual champions were Joe Barbato, Connor Horl and Spencer DeSena. Finishing 2nd were Danny Lofrese, John Wittman, James Roth, and Nick Preziosi. Mike Lofrese finished 3rd, Matt Schmelzinger 3rd, Mike Zingalli 4th and Ed Shannon 4th.
