In Memoriam Sturges B. Shields, Jr.
Sturges B. Shields Jr., whose career at the United Nations spanned 30 years and included posts in Jamaica, Jerusalem, the Congo, Mexico City and Geneva, died January 15th at the Hospice Inn, Melville. He was 91. He was a resident of Stewart Manor, New York since 1944. He was an active parishioner and Vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church in Garden City. He is survived by sons Lawrence C. Shields of Port Washington and Bradford T. Shields of Austin, Texas; daughters-in-law Ellen B. Shields of Port Washington and Nancy Shields of Austin; grandchildren Christopher and wife Shannon Shields, Jonathan and wife Ana Shields of Port Washington, Brad and wife Beth Shields of Austin, and Jennifer Shields of New York City; great-grandchildren Carter Ivy and Madison Berg Shields of Port Washington. He is preceded in death by wife Joan Dodds Shields in 1999 and daughter-in-law Patti Shields in 2003. Shields received his B.S. in economics from Yale University in 1937 and his C.P.A. accreditation from New York State in 1942.
Shields began his career working for Ernst & Ernst from 1937-1945. His lifetime of volunteer activities included service to the United Way of Long Island from 1976-1997 and board member from 1995-1997; president of the Stewart Manor Lions Club which bestowed the Distinguished Recognition Award in 2002; founder of the Lake Dutchess Homeowner's Association and treasurer and Vestry member of Christ Episcopal Church of Garden City. He was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America, with more than 50 years of service. He began in 1953 as treasurer for Pack 134. He volunteered in numerous positions with the Nassau County Council, serving on the executive board for four separate terms. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award -- the council's highest honor - in 1969; he also received the Chairman's Award from the Shelter Rock District in 2002. He received the Mary Anna Meyer United Caring Award from the Long Island United Way in 1996; the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Award in 1998; and the Bishop's Cross for Distinguished Service from the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island in 2006. He is the recipient of a community service award in 2001 bestowed upon him by the Village of Stewart Manor for more than 50 years of service to Boy Scout Troop 134. The award was given for the respect and admiration he earned by developing young Boy Scouts into leaders and instilling community service into the lives of hundreds of young men. A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church of Garden City, officiated by the Rev. Debra L. Low- Skinner, on Saturday, January 19th. Macfarlane, M.D. died February 5, 2007 at 90 years of age of pneumonia. Born March 23, 1916 in Albany, New York, son of Jeptha B. Macfarlane and Mary Worden Macfarlane, where he lived until moving to the Bronx at age 12. Both his parents died in his late teens. He and his brother Malcom continued to live in the Bronx while he attended Manhattan College. Following college he went to Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He met his childhood sweetheart Virginia Foran in high school at 16 years of age. He married Virginia on February 14, 1943 and entered the Navy. He served as a Navy physician in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned home and practiced internal medicine in Queens, New York. After 15 years of internal medicine, he entered the practice of psychiatry, which he continued in until his retirement at age 75. He and Virginia had six children during their years in New York living in Brooklyn, Queens, Westbury and Garden City. He retired from medicine in 1993. He and Virginia then moved to Prospect, KY to be near their son Michael. In 2002, they moved to La Costa Glen in Carlsbad California to be near their oldest son Robert and daughter Jean. Jeptha's life was notable for his devotion to family, faith, friends and Medicine. He maintained a devout Catholic faith throughout his life. His love and devotion to his wife Virginia began in high school and grew with each passing year. Their six children all fondly remember him as the most loving father anyone could ever hope for. His loyalty to his friends was obvious to all. He gave 50 years to the profession of medicine and is remembered by his patients for his skills and caring way. Jeptha's quiet life was the kind that we all aspire to and very few get to witness firsthand. Those who knew him consider themselves lucky. He will be greatly missed by all who came in contact with him. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Virginia, sons Robert, James, and Michael Macfarlane and daughters Jean Folkerth, Nancy Anderson and Mary Bolton. His grand children include Michael and Mark Macfarlane, Jaime and Kevin Cooper, Matthew Bolton, Christopher Anderson, Jeptha Macfarlane and Kelly Macfarlane. A Navy burial was held at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, New York on February 10, 2007.
