BOCES Sets Facilities Referendum By Stephanie Mariel Petrellese
Mark your calendars: Nassau BOCES will be holding a facilities referendum on Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. All Nassau County residents are encouraged to cast their vote at one of five polling locations: Nassau BOCES Administrative Center in Garden City, Alternative Learning Program in Greenvale, Barry Tech in Westbury, Eagle Avenue School in West Hempstead and Rosemary Kennedy Center. No special registration is necessary. Nassau BOCES is asking voters to approve an expenditure of up to $14.9 million for the expansion and renovation of their school in Greenvale. The building is used for the Alternative Learning Program, a high school for teenagers who are academically capable but have difficulty with peer and adult relationships. Local school districts and county tax-payers will not see additional costs due to the renovation since all of the funds will be available through existing Nassau BOCES appropriations. New York State law requires a county-wide public referendum to approve the expenditure of money by a BOCES for constructing a building. A vote is necessary in this case because part of the school will be demolished and new space added. For more information, visit www.nassauboces.org.
