Garden City Library News Information Services Available Through Library's Databases The Garden City Public Library offers patrons a free gateway to the "hidden Web" at the library's website www.gardencitypl.org. Users can access the Internet resources that professional librarians turn to when they need high-quality information in the library. Seniors, homebound patrons, students, and all Garden City patrons can research questions online and get reliable answers, in their own home or office, seven days a week at any time of day or night. The library subscribes to valuable and authoritative information services which are available free of charge to every Garden City Library member. These databases provide access to online services that can help you with many different projects. Topics include: reviews of books, movies and music; business directories; college and career information; consumer evaluations; educational games; legal forms; medical information; scholarly resources and guides for reports and term papers; support groups; and test preparation. Among the recent updates to the Library's databases are Gale's Price It!, Career Cruising, and NextReads. Residents who may have discovered an unexpected treasure while rummaging around the attic to put away the holiday decorations can consult Gale's Price It! Antiques & Collectibles. This database gathers data from multiple sources - including eBay, GoAntiques.com, TIAS, and 50 conventional auction houses - to help the user determine a realistic price for art, books, clocks, furniture, glass, jewelry, porcelain pottery, sports memorabilia, toys, watches, and other treasures. This growing database is continually updated and contains more than 10 million images and 125 searchable categories to help ascertain the maker or artist of an item. The Library recently reinstated its subscription to Career Cruising, which can help match the user to a college and a career. Since there was an overlap with the information offered through CareerZone (a free service of the NY State Dept. of Labor) and Learning Express Library's (LEL) Destination-U college-matching component, the Library had discontinued Career Cruising. Since LEL no longer offers Destination-U, Career Cruisng is once again available for college students, career seekers, and job changers NextReads, is a new service from EBSCO that provides reading recommendations for your favorite genres. If you have an email address, you can subscribe to any of 22 different newsletters. Fiction and nonfiction newsletter topics include Biography and Memoir, Fantasy, Mystery, Nature and Science, and Audiobooks. There are also two children's newsletters and one for young adults. Newsletters are sent on a monthly or bimonthly basis. Each one describes up to 12 books, with links to the Library catalog so that subscribers can place a hold on a title. Even if you don't have an email addresses, you can view the newsletters online, either at the Library or from any computer with Internet access. Interested Garden City Library card holders can visit the reference desk and pick up a newly revised copy of the Tap the Hidden Web brochure, which gives complete descriptions of all of the online resources available. Patrons can use the databases both at home and in the library by clicking on the database link at the library's website www.gardencitypl.org. Once a particular database has been selected, a user will be prompted to enter the library card number. Garden City Library members have excellent online resources at their fingertips, 24 hours of the day.
