Community Club Presents Hicks Nurseries

The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, Inc. invites all members and guests to their February 6, 2008 General Program, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Casino, to hear Stephen Hicks, president of Hicks Nurseries, and Marilyn Hicks, director of the Company, give an informal talk outlining some of the History of the Nurseries founded in Westbury in 1853. They will also share some of the history and stories of the Hicks family, which has been a part of Long Island since the 17th Century.

The Hicks family started farming on Long Island as early as the late 1600's but it was in 1853 that the business currently called Hicks Nurseries, Inc. had its beginning. That was when Isaac Hicks began selling trees to his neighbors. The Nursery evolved into a large growing operation supplying trees and plants to many of the mansions of the Gold Coast and beyond later, to meet the needs of the new post-war suburban communities it transformed itself again into the full service garden center you see today.

Through all the years it has remained family owned and Stephen Hicks is the 6th generation to manage the business. Please be sure to join us on February 6th to meet Stephen and Marilyn hear their history and stories and stay to meet and chat with them at the tea hour immediately following the program.
