fall prevention for seniors On February 6, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the Garden City Senior Center at St. Paul's, Marianne C. Bee, RN-BC MA, and Peggy Pagan, MS, will be hosting a talk on fall prevention for seniors. Ms. Bee has a Masters degree in Nursing, is Board Certified in Gerontology and has her own practice in Garden City as a Geriatric Care manager. Ms. Pagan has a Masters degree and is a certified athletic trainer specializing in stretching and strength training for seniors. According to the Department of Health and Human Services Center for disease control and prevention, more than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States. Twenty percent to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bruises, hip fractures or head traumas. These injuries can make it hard to get around and limit independent living. They also can increase the risk of early death. Falls are more common in older adults but should not be considered a normal part of aging. "People fall for so many reasons," Ms. Bee says, "To name only a few: physical limitation, medication side-effects, poor vision, clutter or even how objects are arranged in the home." Ms. Pagan added that other reasons for seniors falling include "Poor mobility, improper use of aids such as a cane, poor exercise habits and, of course, slippery floors." Ms. Bee and Ms. Pagan will be instructing attendees on the many ways in which falls can be prevented including exercises suitable for seniors that will improve gait and balance. To learn more information on how to "Walk Tall and Not Fall," Ms. Bee and Ms. Pagan encourage residents to attend the seminar.
