GCAA Travel Basketball

Our travel teams have continued their high level of play as we move into mid January in the very competitive Island Garden Super League. Here are this past week's highlights: KIFFEL 8TH GIRLS improved to 8 and 0 with a hard fought 35 to 29 win over LIL Pavinelli. Down 11 points early in the third quarter the girls played great team defense the rest of the way. The team was led by the strong inside play of Kelly Sprotte and Katie Trimmer and the all around good play of Alex Bruno. Our next game is on Friday the 25th against Long Beach, last year's champion and the only other undefeated team in the league.........GRANVILLE 5TH BOYS over-came a 7 point deficit going into the 4th quarter and beat a tough Dix Hills team 44-39 with Bobby Clarke, Chris Larkin and Brian Goulard leading the way..........KELLY 4TH GIRLS went 3-0 this week in the competitive 4th/5th grade girls division placing them tied for third place in the standings. Maddie McCabe and Erin Pasquale led the team in a victory over Jericho last Friday night. On Saturday, the girls were away in Dix Hills playing a very tough Dix Hills 5th grade team. The girls may have been smaller in size, but not in heart. The girls fought hard the entire game. The 4th quarter saw the Kelly girls score 4 straight points to cut the lead to 1. Then the girls forced a turnover with 12 seconds left to regain possession. A missed shot led to a few HUGE offensive rebounds and put backs ending with a foul. With 2 seconds left on the clock and the girls down 1, Dix Hills made the unfortunate mistake in fouling Julia McGuire. Julia hits both free throws to win the game by 1 point. This was a great " team" win where everyone had a big contribution at one point or another. Hoping that the girls wouldn't be on their game after such an exciting win, they came back on Tuesday night to easily beat Bayside. Isabel Klatt and Caroline Peppard led the team in their latest victory.........KELLY 6TH BOYS remain high in the standings going 1-1 this past week keeping them in a tie for second place at 6-2. Led by Kevin Mullin and Michael Collins, the boys scored the first 17 points of the game on Friday against Jericho. Cody George and Drew Kiley were strong defensively in the 39-18 victory. On Tuesday, the boys played a strong JCC team that was 5-1 entering the game and lost by a point in the final seconds. Tim McDonagh and Jay MacIntyre led the team in their efforts.........Led by Cailee McCarthy's scoring and Emily Basile's shotblocking BASEL 5TH GIRLS won their third game of the season........Behind the ballhandling of Alexis Leighton and Annemarie Kane RAPHAEL 5TH GIRLS are now 6-2 and tied for 3rd place in their division..........With their latest victory over the HHH Fury WALCZYK 6TH GIRLS sport a 6-3 ledger good for a 2nd place tie in their division......By virtue of their latest two victories TARICHE 5TH BOYS vaulted into 2nd place, now 6-3, featuring the strong play of Darius Iraj and Kieran McGoldrick.........CAPETOLA 4TH BOYS reside in 2nd place in their division with a 7-1 record.....Logon to the Island Garden website, www.islandgarden.com , for complete schedules, results and stand-ings.
