Girls Basketball Starts On High Note

The Garden City girls varsity basketball team started their season off on a high note with two non league victories over Westbury and Plainview JFK. Against JFK, Freshman Barbara Sullivan led the scoring for the Trojans with 13 points and 11 rebounds giving the Trojans the 69-35 win. Another non league game was up next as Garden City faced St Mary's on December 15th. Sullivan, once again, led the scoring with 15 points but GC lost the game by a score of 53-34.

The team's first league game came on December 18th at home against the Manhasset Indians. Garden City was leading going into the 4th quarter but Manhasset's 15-7 fourth quarter rally led to the Indians 48-45 victory. Becky Lynch scored 21 points for the Trojans.

In their next Conference game Garden City played host to the Wantagh Warriors. Garden City entered the 4th quarter with a 37-30 lead but Wantagh slowly crept back. The Trojan's Diana Leondis hit a three-pointer from 30 feet with five seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 47 and send the game into overtime. With 55 seconds left in overtime, the Warrior's Jackie Sileo hit a three-pointer to give Wantagh a 58-55 lead. Sileo proceeded to go 2-for-2 from the free-throw line with 17 seconds left which gave Wantagh the 60-55 win.

During the Christmas break the Trojans traveled to Bethpage to compete in the Bethpage Dad's Club Tournament. The first round pitted GC against Bay Shore. Becky Lynch scored 20 points for Garden City to lead the team to a 65-47 victory. Garden City advanced to the final game against Bethpage on December 29th where the Trojans won the tournament with their 69-35 victory.

Garden City began 2008 with a conference game at Floral Park on January 4th. The Trojans lost that game by a score of 54-35 and then rebounded on January 8th with a 72-48 victory over Malverne. Leading the scoring for the Trojans against Malverne was Diana Leondis with 20 points and five steals. Barbara Sullivan had a career high 19 points with 14 rebounds. Other scoring for Garden City included Becky Lynch (15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals), Katie Poppe (7), Amalia DeBrosse (4), Jennifer MacIntyre (3), Dayna Defliese and Brittany Wilton (2 points each).

The Trojans will play host to South Side tomorrow, Saturday January 12th at 2pm.
