Shovel A Path

To the Editor:

Since winter made an early appearance this year and I am sure that we can expect more nasty weather to come, may I take this opportunity to appeal to those merchants and residents (both in the Village and in Garden City South) on walking routes to the Nassau Boulevard train station (especially those on Nassau Boulevard, Kilburn Road and Euston Road) to remind them if at all possible to please try to shovel at least a path on your property so that people may walk safely (and those with corner property to clear a path into the street). Many more people than you may realize have to walk to and from that train station daily to get to work and after the storms of last weekend, unshoveled snow and slush became dangerous ice with Monday's frigid temperatures. In many cases the only route to walk was in the streets on Kilburn Road and Euston Road which can be also be hazardous but were preferable to falling on the ice (as one obviously cannot walk in the street on Nassau Boulevard due to the volume of traffic).

So after the next snowstorm, please think of your neighbors and clear a path. To those who do shovel a path - THANK YOU - it is very much appreciated.

Questionable Use Of Police Personnel And Equipment

To the Editor:

On both Saturday, December 20th and Sunday, December 21st, 2008 I had the occassion to pass the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Edgemere Road. I noticed that in addition to the barricades, saw horses, large orange signs and a few red flags, there were five, that's five Garden City Police cars with their lights blinking. The road has been closed because of the installation of equipment for the LIRR. This seems to me, an already overtaxed 30+ year resident of Garden City, a huge waste of both manpower and equipment.

I called the Village Police Department and spoke to the Sergeant on duty to voice my displeasure at the situation. As the Sergeant explained it to me, "the manpower and equipment was being paid for by the LIRR." I was also informed that my qualifications did not qualify me to judge their actions and these decisions were made by a higher authority. My few words to this "Higher Authority," are "the Citizens are the ultimate authority over the police and not the other way around." Read your Constitution.

Five cars idling, each with a police officer, no matter who pays for it, for each of the two days is a waste of manpower and equipment. This is a prime example of "over-kill"...

There are few things in this world that I am sure of, certainly this is one of them.

Sincerely,

Richard R. Dolan

Get Involved

To the Editor:

Many of us believe that those Trustees who supported AvalonBay and that now want to demolish St. Paul's do not deserve to be re-elected. These Trustees brought us the AvalonBay fiasco, yet want to continue to make decisions about this historic building.

Our Trustees are elected by the residents, not anointed. The respective Property Owner Associations (POA) will be holding elections of our Trustees. We are not obligated to accept those Trustees who have been "nominated" by the POA's. We can nominate other candidates and elect them as our Trustees. Ask your POA's about their rules for nominating other Trustees.

Remember, there were a "myriad of municipal uses" for St. Paul's when it was purchased in 1993 and a respected architectural firm concluded that St. Paul's could accommodate many Village functions.

If you want to save St. Paul's, get involved!
