Mike D'Innocenzo speaks on "The Aristocracy of the Robe: The Significance of Lifetime Judges (and those who appoint them) for American Democracy"

On Sunday, January 11, 2009, at 11 am, the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island presents Dr. Michael D'Innocenzo, Professor of History at Hofstra University, speaking on "The Aristocracy of the Robe: The Significance of Lifetime Judges (and those who appoint them) for American Democracy." The talk will focus not only on the Supreme Court, but also on the approximately 862 Federal judges who also receive lifetime appointments, and the legacy of President Bush.

Dr. D'Innocenzo received the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Historical Association.

The presentation will take place at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, located at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower.)

The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island Celebrates Science in Honor of Charles Darwin's 200th Birthday!

Free Events for Adults and Children

On Sunday, January 25, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is celebrating science in conjunction with Darwin's 200th birthday. Arnell Dowret, host and producer of WBAI's program "Equal Time for Free Thought," will examine the relationship between humans and the rest of the nature.

Ruth Ashby, Hofstra University professor and author of the new children's book, Young Charles Darwin and the Voyage of the Beagle, will give insight into Darwin and his struggles to conduct his studies.

Arts and crafts will be available all day. Other children's activities will include a "survival of the fittest" game, an extraction of DNA from strawberries, and dissecting owl pellets. Lunch and science-related items will be sold.
