Girls Basketball Goes 5-0 To Begin Season

Only five games into the season and Garden City's girls basketball team is already proving that they are a force to be reckoned with. As of December 13th they are 5-0 and have outscored their opponents by a total of over 100 points. Junior Diana Leondis has been unstoppable, leading the team in scoring, averaging 16 points a game.
Most recently the team played in the Syosset Tournament where they beat Plainview JFK 69-26 in the first game of the Tournament. Leondis had 21 points, seven assists and four rebounds in only 16 minutes. Barbara Sullivan added 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the game. That victory led the Trojans to the final against Division. With a 46-39 victory over Division, Garden City won the Tournament. Leondis was named MVP and Sullivan, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, was selected to the all-tournament team. Freshman Christina Mangels had a career-high 22 rebounds.
Prior to the Syosset Tournament, GC hosted Seaford on December 11th. Diana Leondis led the team in scoring with 15 points as the Trojans went on to win 57-40. Barbara Sullivan and Kim Ryan scored 10 points each for GC followed by teammates Kerry Hosford (6), Katie Poppe (6), Elizabeth Stutzmann (4), Amalia DeBrosse (4), and Katie Trimmer (2).

Head coach Anthony Sparacia and assistants Tony Leondis and Scott Walley are heading up a relatively young team that consists of six freshman, two sophomores, five juniors and one senior. Freshman Katie Poppe led the scoring against Manhasset on December 8th with 16 points. Other freshmen include: Kim Ryan, Elizabeth Stutzmann, Katie Trimmer, Catherine Dickinson and Christina Mangels. The two sophomores on the team are Barbara Sullivan and Alyssa Rosello. Juniors include Kerry Hosford, Kate O'Dell, Amalia DeBrosse, Liz Glover and Diana Leondis. Seva Mahramas is the only senior on the team.
