The Garden City News will have early deadlines for the next two issues.

For the issue of Friday, December 26, we will need to receive materials by Monday, December 22.

For the issue of Friday, January 2, we will need to receive materials by Monday, December 29.

As we go to press, the decision on whether to demolish St. Paul's will be before the Board of Trustees. In the event that the board chooses demolition, the public will be asked to vote, this time in a binding referendum, to authorize the demolition funds.

While we personally hope that the building survives, such a vote couldn't come at a worse time in terms of the economy. As the recession grows deeper and every day brings more bad news on the financial pages, it gets harder to expect residents to find it in their hearts to mothball the building.

Even if the voters turn down the bond for demolition, what then? Would we just go on as we have until the building either falls down or is done in by vandals? That hardly seems preferable.
