Repairing The World

2008-12-12 / Community

On Sunday, January 18, at 11 am, the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island presents Dr. Scott Carlin, Associate Professor of Earth and Environmental Science at C. W. Post University, discussing "Biodiversity, Carbon, or Economic Collapse: Defining our Existential Crisis."

Dr. Carlin contends unless we learn to respond collectively to our world with love and reverence, we will face a barbaric, Mad-Max future of resource scarcity, wars and eocide. He says, "Our major life-giving systems (ecology, economy, and energy) are on life support. Never in human history has so much been at stake. Never has it been more important to reexamine who we are as individuals and world cultures." Dr. Carlin talks about how people can maximize their leverage and begin repairing the world.

Dr. Carlin began teaching at CW Post in 2005. From 1996 to 2004, he served as co-director of the Institute for Sustainable Development at Long Island University. Dr. Carlin worked on a variety of regional projects involving land use, transportation and alternative energy projects that include a breast cancer mapping project for the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition and sustainable indictors for the City of Glen Cove. In 2007, Dr. Carlin formed the Long Island Climate Solutions Network. He is writing a book examining sustainability issues in suburbia.

The presentation will take place at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, located at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower.)

There is no fee and all are invited to attend. For more information call 516-741-7304.
