Thanks to a beautiful sunny day and a new race website (www.gcturkeytrot.com), the 31st annual Garden City Turkey Trot set new records for both runner turnout and money raised for the race's two beneficiaries, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team compiled a 3 - 2 League record during the first two months of the '08 - '09 winter season. The Wings started this season with three wins and one tie during a non-League "round robin" tournament with the Roslyn Bulldogs and the Syosset Braves. More ... Megan Zarriello accepting her medal for placing sixth in the 500 freestyle at the New York State swimming and diving championships. Thirty girls from Nassau County, including six from Garden City, competed at the championships held in Buffalo on November 21 and 22. More ... On November 23, the Holy Spirit/St. Anne's Cross country team competed in the Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships. With very windy and cold conditions, on one of the most difficult courses in the country (Van Cortland Park in the Bronx), the team competed at a high level and ran their best times of the season. At this year's Garden City Centennial Soccerfest, the U11 Girls team, the Power, led a cleat and equipment drive that resulted in the collection of nearly 200 pairs of soccer cleats, as well as soccer balls and shin pads.
