2008-12-05 / School

Two Garden City High School seniors were recently announced as winners in the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards for Superior Writing. Pictured here are (left to right): Guidance Counselor Tim Casale, Principal Nanine Cuttitta, NCTE winners Elizabeth Debold and Sarah D'Antonio, and English teachers Mrs. Nancy Fleming and Mrs. Wendy Bouchard.

A total of 1,789 students from across the nation were nominated to participate in this year's competition. Each piece of original writing was submitted by the nominee and evaluated by two judges. Garden City High School senior Sarah D'Antonio submitted a fable with a moral appropriate for all students: Don't give in to peer pressure. Elizabeth Debold wrote a sample letter to the editor regarding the upcoming election and how to change the political climate in this country.

Garden City High School's English Department received a Certificate of Commendation for Sarah and Elizabeth's winning entries. The girls were also honored with a certificate of recognition presented by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Robert Feirsen, and the Board of Education at the October 21st meeting.
