From The Mayor's Office
The Property Owners' Associations sponsored "poll" has now been completed. There were 5002 votes, which is comparable to a national mid-term election turnout. 873 of the votes were to pursue a development agreement with AvalonBay; 2,272 for demolition; and 1,857 for "mothballing." As Mayor, I thank you for your input. Now I and the Board of Trustees face our responsibility to make a decision about the future of the Main Building site, taking into account the views of the public but exercising our individual and independent Trustee responsibilities. I hope for all our sakes that we do the right thing. FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE VILLAGE OF GARDEN CITY I am pleased to report that we were advised on December 1st by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that it has approved the Incorporated Village's application to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Flood insurance is now available to local property owners and may be purchased from any insurance agent or broker licensed to do business in the State. Those who are interested in obtaining insurance protection against losses from future flooding are encouraged to contact their insurance agent or broker. This year's program will feature the Garden City High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Tom Wagner along with the Village Music Makers and thanks to the Fire Department, Santa Claus and hot chocolate. Please bring your entire family to welcome Santa and the Holiday Season. SENIOR CITIZEN FLU IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, in cooperation with, the Nassau County Department of Health and the Nassau University Medical Center, will co-sponsor a free county-wide, flu immunization program for senior citizens. The immunization program for our area will be held at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents 60 years of age or older, who are interested in receiving the vaccine should call the Garden City Recreation Department at 465-4075 to make an appointment. SHOP IN GARDEN CITY FIRST Residents in the Village of Garden City are very fortunate in having a vital business community comprised of merchants who are committed to serve us from their shops along Franklin Avenue, Seventh Street and New Hyde Park Road. I urge each of you to continue to patronize these local businesses during the holiday and throughout the year. Our business community wants to know how they are doing, so take a minute the next time you are shopping and let them know what you think about the quality of their products, attention to customer service and the new "Merchant Card" program of our local Chamber of Commerce. QUALITY, SELECTION AND OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE SHOP GARDEN CITY FIRST!
