Receives Honorary Degree from Alma Mater

Nicholas A. Cummings On Wednesday, November 19, Adelphi alumnus Nicholas A. Cummings Ph.D. '58 will return to his alma mater to receive an honorary doctor of science degree Honoris Causa, and to deliver the lecture, "Changing Role of Psychology: Trends in Mental Health and How Psychologists Can Lead in This Transformation." The event will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Cummings is former president of the American Psychological Association and is currently chairman of the Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Foundation and founding board chairman of Care Integra, a for-profit company that works with clients to create "integrated healthcare solutions." In 2007, Dr. Cummings published his 46th book, Eleven Blunders That Have Crippled Psychotherapy in America: A Remedial Unblundering.

A visionary in his field, Dr. Cummings has been at the forefront of many significant changes in the psychological practice, including the professional school movement and freedom-of-choice legislation that requires health insurance coverage for psychotherapy. Foreseeing the industrialization of healthcare, and particularly behavioral healthcare, he founded American Biodyne, the nation's first psychology-driven managed behavioral health organization. Dr. Cummings has received numerous awards, including psychology's highest, the APF Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Practice.

Dr. Cummings received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, a master's degree in psychology from Claremont Graduate School, a doctorate in clinical psychology from Adelphi University, and several honorary doctorates for his innovations in such diverse fields as education and the Greek classics.
