Chamber, Historical Society Yuletide Reception
      The Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street, will be the setting for a special complimentary Yuletide Reception next Wednesday, December 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to be hosted by the Historical Society and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

"Coats for Kids" Drive
      The Garden City High School Fashion Club is currently running a "Coats for Kids" coat drive this holiday season through Monday, December 15th. Any donation of new or gently used children and adult-sized coats would be greatly appreciated. Coats can be placed in the "Coats for Kids" box in the Merillon Avenue hallway near the high school's main office.

The Office Cat
      ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, there will be a concert performed by Amy Speace at Garden Stage at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 223 Stewart Ave., at 8 p.m. The Baltimore native spent much of her youth in Minnesota and rural Pennsylvania, and studied piano, clarinet and saxophone. Speace's vividly drawn songs reflect the wealth of experience that the artist has packed into her young life.

      For the third time in her legal career, Attorney Adrienne Flipse Hausch of Garden City has been recognized for her outstanding pro bono legal commitment. She was again named the Pro Bono Attorney of the Month, it was announced in October by Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA) President Peter Levy.

Back From Iraq
      1st Lieutenant Thomas M. Ryder, a 2006 graduate of The United States Military Academy-West Point and a 2002 alumnus of Garden City High School recently completed a 15-month deployment to Iraq with the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) and returned to his post at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

      I hope that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you all practiced control while at the table. Now, according to the papers, it's time to diet (to get in shape for Christmas) and to shop. You're on your own in the diet area but I hope that you will practice shopping in Garden City as your golden rule. The shops in town have a lot going for them as far as merchandise goes.

"Biggest Loser" Contest
      From July 1st through September 30th, thirty-five men and women took part in a "Biggest Loser" weight loss competition at Personal Training Studio in Garden City. All contestants paid a $20 entry fee and in doing so, there was $700 donated to The Miracle Foundation whose goal is improving cancer patient care, increasing cancer awareness and funding worthy scientific research.

Stewart Consort Performs Renaissance Music At Cathedral
      On Sunday, December 7 at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Incarnation, the Stewart Consort will be performing in its first concert. The Stewart Consort was formed about eight months ago by a group of singers from the Cathedral Choirs interested in performing Renaissance choral music in a chamber music setting at a high level.

Seminars On Emergency Preparedness
      Through a generous $40,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation, Adelphi University this fall presented three seminars on emergency preparedness, including the special issues faced by at-risk populations and those in hospital management. The grant reflects the Allstate commitment to protecting Long Islanders by helping to raise awareness and emergency preparedness in the face of disasters.

      Children ages 21/2-5 (and an adult) will make a Winter Holiday Hat with Liane on Saturday, December 6th at either 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Registration began Saturday, November 22nd in the Children's Room.       Barbara Sheridan (left) from Look Who's Cooking demonstrated how to make a variety of hot hors d'oeuvres and special desserts for a holiday open house. Participants at the Garden City Library program enjoyed tasting each of the items and took home the recipes to prepare them for their own guests during the holidays.

      Jackson Bautch invited his grandmother to come to speak to his second-grade class at Stratford School. Mrs. Bautch lives in Houston, Texas, which recently suffered through Hurricane Ike. She talked to the class about hurricane preparations and what the experience was like at the height of the storm.

Our Seniors will travel by Recreation Bus to Cinelli's, where we will enjoy a three course luncheon with laughter, Christmas carols, and good food. Adelphi Golf Classic Raises $100,000
      Adelphi University's 20th Annual Golf Classic on September 22, 2008 raised $100,000 for student athletic scholarships. More than 200 alumni and friends teed off at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City for the festive day-long event and to honor Gus Scacco '84, Managing Director of AG Asset Management with the 2008 President's Award for Outstanding Achievement and Friendship.

Troop 1251 Bridge East And West
      Second grade Brownie Troop 1251 had a fabulous time learning about and tasting Indian traditions and cuisine at Akbar Indian Restaurant. The girls spent a lovely afternoon with their hostess, Nina who showed everyone how to wear a bindi; dressed the girls in classic Indian dresses; painted the girls' hands in traditional Indian designs; and taught them some Hindu words and phrases.

      The Bears and Webelos I's from St. Joseph's Church took their annual trip to Schiff Preserve in Wading River to join hundreds of others scouts during Webelos Woods. The boys are only eligible for this weekend twice in their scouting career. They all enjoyed an weekend of testing their skills and the fine scout cuisine!!

      Boy Scout Pack 55, sponsored by the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation, held its annual campout on the grounds of the Cathedral on Saturday night, September 20. The date previously scheduled for the campout had to be cancelled because of inclement weather. After pitching tents and sleeping in the great outdoors, the boys and their leaders attended the 9:30 a.m.
