Thunder 11's Borges Fall To Massapequa 8-0 In Championship Game
The Thunder 11's in action
It was a sunny but very cold afternoon at John Burns Park in Massapequa where the Garden City Thunder was preparing to play the undefeated Massapequa Mustangs in the NCYFL Championship game. The Mustangs won the coin toss and ran the opening kickoff back to the Thunder 30 yard before Conor Muldoon was able to tackle the ball carrier. After advancing the ball to the Thunder 3 yard line, the Thunder goal line defense decided that that was far enough and stopped the 4th down attempt to score giving the Thunder the ball. Unfortunately the Thunder got caught in the end zone for a safety giving Massapequa a 2 - 0 lead. The rest of the half was dominated by the Thunder defense, forcing the Mustangs to punt 4 times. The Thunder Defense was led by Brian Goulard, Lucas D'Aversa, Luke Armstrong, Ben Walsh, Matias Yianatos, Justin Holloway, Thomas Mascola, Chris Repetti, Kevin Sprotte, Justin Samardich, Liam Byrnes, James Sullivan, Brian Colamussi, Colin Castro, Patrick Slovensky and Conor Muldoon. The second half began with the Thunder receiving the kickoff but we were still unable to move the ball consistently and the game continued to be controlled by both defenses. The game continued into the 4th quarter with the score still 2 - 0! Our boys on offense kept working hard and had some success but really couldn't crack the Mustang Defense!! Our Offense was led by Conor Muldoon, Justin Holloway, Brian Goulard, Matthew Esposito, Chris Moscatiello, Daniel Krumm, Brian Colamussi, Jack Murtagh, Darius Iraj, Kevin Sprotte, Liam Byrnes, Justin Samardich, James Sullivan and Matthew Borges. With about 5 minutes left in the game, Massapequa was able to make an adjustment to our great defense and finally score a touchdown making the score 8 - 0. Our offense got one last chance but once again was stymied by the Mustang defense. As Vince Lombardi once said "We did not lose the game, we just ran out of time!" The coaches and parents were and are very proud of the effort the Thunder put forth in this game as we had lost to the Mustangs 3 weeks earlier 26 - 6! This group of Mustangs have never lost a game and are now 48 - 0 from 7 year old to 11 year old football and our team came as close as anybody to beating them!!! The coaching staff would once again like to thank each and every boy for their relentless effort this game and this entire season!!! Remember boys, "Focus, Discipline and Responsibility!!!!!" GO THUNDER!!!!!!!
