Although she has been dead for almost 200 years, Jane Austen's popularity continues to this very day. The reason behind this phenomenon was explained to the members of The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead on Wednesday, November 12th at the Garden City Casino as Barbara Hellering invited members to take "A Look at Jane Austen's World."
Using many slides, Ms. Hellering emphasized the role of women in Austen's day and the necessity for marrying as well as one could. She discussed England of the 19th century during the Regency period and how the time she lived in was a major influence in all her novels.
Ms. Hellering was introduced by Prem Chauhan, drama literature chairperson. Willa Ward and Ruth La Bosco were in charge of arrangements of the day and Sally Papoulas attended to decorations. Door greeters were Adele Lynch, Florence Freda and Ruth Brown. Jennie and Ida Catania served refreshments and Terri Ferrari and Phyllis Dima were pourers of the day.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of The Community Club may phone the office at 746-0488 between 9:30 and 12:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
