What's Up For Young Adults At The Library YAK & SNACK # 2 TWILIGHT
Fifteen young adults participated in the Yak & Snack to discuss Stephenie Myer's Twilight on Monday evening, November 3rd. All are anxiously awaiting the opening of the movie, November 21st. The discussion was lively and the menu of cider, apples, cookies and chips was appreciated. The group had a lot of fun playing Twilight Trivia contests with the highest scorers winning Caramel apples.
YAK & SNACK #3 FEVER, 1793
The third Fall Yak & Snack will feature Laurie Halse Anderson's Fever, 1793. This book is a gripping story about living morally under the shadow of the rampant death from yellow fever which occurred in the summer of 1793 in Philadelphia. Matilda Cook, 16 years old, separated from her sick mother, must learn to cope with the horrors of a yellow fever epidemic. How would you cope under the same circumstances? Enjoy a treat and talk about it with Mrs. Kelly and other YAs on December 3rd at 7 PM.
BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Registration began Tuesday, October 7 for the Young Adult Babysitting workshop. Those who attend both sessions will be awarded a certificate of completion. The First Aid/ Child Care Session and the Safety Session were well attended with 29 certificates awarded to those who attended both meetings. The additional program dates of December 16th, 3:45-5:15 PM for the Safety Session, where the focus is on how to keep the children and the babysitter out of harm's way and how to deal with any unavoidable accident or incident, and December 17th for the First Aid/Child Care Session have been filled with those on the original wait list and those who have recently expressed interest. Anyone unable to attend in December is asked to let Mrs. Kelly know so that the new wait list can be reached. Plans are in progress to have the final meetings of this program for this school year in March/ April with meeting times of 6:30 PM. December participants are asked to bring a doll, Cabbage Patch size, to practice techniques of holding, feeding, diapering and administering first aid under the guidance of the instructors to the December 17th meeting.
SCRAPBOOKING WORKSHOP
Christine Rissanen facilitated a very successful scrapbooking workshop on Saturday, November 15th at 3 PM. Attendees created two scrapbook pages with holiday designs. Those who braved the miserable weather were treated to a wonderful afternoon.
ITALIC CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Registration began on Tuesday, November 25th for Italic Calligraphy Workshop to be held on Wednesday, December 10th at 7 PM. Learn the techniques of calligraphy and be able to create beautiful, original holiday cards. Novices will learn basic techniques while those with some experience can improve their skills. Each participant will take home the pens used at the workshop. Class size is limited to 15 so register early.
DISCOVER THE YA COMPUTER CENTER
Use the printing coupons won at the Back to School Bash at the new YA Computer Center which is up and running. The newly renovated Young Adult Room houses a Computer Center exclusive for those patrons in Grades 6-12. There are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. Using this computer will insure company of peers only. Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased or credited with Summer Reading Club certificates at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page.
