Operation Wounded Warrior Continues

Volunteer Firefighters Dave Hroncich & Bob Horvath at St. Paul's displayVolunteer Firefighters Dave Hroncich & Bob Horvath at St. Paul's display Garden City Volunteer Firefighters, under the direction of Chief James Meehan, are once again co-sponsoring Operation Wounded Warrior this year with area volunteer fire departments. Operation Wounded Warrior will be on the road again and will travel to deliver Christmas & Holiday Care Package Items to soldiers wounded in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The care packages will be delivered to wounded soldiers in Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington D.C. & to soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as well. Area volunteer firefighters will be delivering the items the weekend of December 6th. Garden City Assistant Fire Chief Bill Graham noted, "that it brings unbelievable, heartfelt joy to see how appreciative our soldiers are for the support all of us give them. They know these donations come from our communities, and it makes it that more special."

Garden City Volunteer Firefighters will be collecting donations of the following items: letters & cards to soldiers, pre-paid phone cards, pre-paid chain restaurant cards, weightlifting gloves for wheelchair bound patients, pre-paid gift cards (Target, Walmart), sweatshirts, breakaway pants with snaps along leg, electric razors, men's & women's pajamas, boxer shorts, white ankle socks, athletic shorts, sweatpants, women's sport bras, back packs, and toiletries for men & women. In addition, monetary donations are sought to help purchase IPods, LCD TV's & additional clothing for the soldiers and their families. Letters and cards to soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen can also be sent.

Care Package Items and donations can be delivered or sent to: the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department, Operation Wounded Warrior, 347 Stewart Ave, Garden City, New York, 11530 (Fire Headquarters, West Side Village Hall). Please take a moment to donate some of the above items to help those soldiers who are surely in need of uplifting support and a bit of cheer this time of year.
