What's Up For Young Adults At The Library YAK & SNACK

Twilight, part of the popular Stephenie Myers series, was discussed at the Fall's second Yak & Snack on Tuesday, November 3rd. The book discussion was well attended by young adults in grades 7 through 12. The teens also shared refreshments, played Twilight Trivia, and speculated about the upcoming movie, which is scheduled to be released this Thanksgiving.

Registration began on Wednesday, November 5th for the third Yak & Snack to be held on Wednesday, December 3rd from 7 - 8:30 PM. Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson will be discussed. In this work of historical fiction set in 1793, sixteen year old Matilda Cook learns about perseverance and self-reliance when she is forced to cope with the horrors of a yellow fever epidemic while separated from her mother. Teens are invited to join other YAs to discuss the book as well as the progress of medicine and the challenges of illness.

SCRAPBOOKING WORKSHOP

Christine Rissanen will be facilitating a scrapbooking workshop on Saturday, November 15th at 3 PM. This workshop should take 90 minutes. For those who have experience with this art form, skills will be refined. For novices, basic techniques will be taught. For all, holiday themed pages will be produced and taken home. There is a limit of 20 participants so please register early. Registration began on Wednesday, October 29th. ITALIC CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Joanne Insinga returns to teach calligraphy on Wednesday, December 10 from

7 - 8:30 PM, just in time to write holiday cards. Materials will be provided and participants will be given individual pens to keep. Registration begins Tuesday, November 25th. This program is limited to 15 participants. Registration may be done in person, by email at mkelly@gardencitypl.org, or by phone at 742-8405.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP

The first sessions of the two-part Young Adult Babysitting Workshop were held in October. Since the registration filled early the first day, additional dates were scheduled for December 16th and 17th. Those on the wait list get priority placement in the new classes. The Safety Session will be held on Tuesday, December 16th from 3:45 - 5:15PM. The First Aid/ Child Care Session will be held on Wednesday, December 17th, from 3:45-5:45 PM. Participants are asked to bring a doll, Cabbage Patch size, to practice techniques of holding, feeding, diapering and administering first aid under the guidance of the instructors.

DISCOVER THE YA COMPUTER CENTER

Use the printing coupons won at the Back to School Bash at the new YA Computer Center. The newly renovated Young Adult Room houses a Computer Center exclusive for those patrons in Grades 6-12. There are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. Using this computer will insure company of peers only. Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased or credited with Summer Reading Club certificates at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page.
