At the conclusion of his presentation, Agent Gavin Shea answered questions from seventh-graders at Garden City Middle School about his career in the FBI. Seventh-graders at Garden City Middle School recently studied careers, multiple intelligences, being left or right brained, and what that brain dominance can indicate in terms of careers. Students in Constance Beovich's Family and Consumer Sciences class interviewed adults with interesting careers to learn what each career entails. "This type of activity allows the students to more fully appreciate what is involved in each career, and to relate on a more personal level," commented Ms. Beovich.

In early October, as part of this unit of study, seventh graders attended a presentation by Mr. Gavin Shea, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent for over fourteen years. "Every day as an FBI agent is challenging, exciting, and very rewarding. And every day is different," Mr. Shea commented. After explaining the application process and the 16-week FBI Academy training program to the students, he emphasized the on-the-job importance of good decision making and always staying within the limits of the law. Mr. Shea drew parallels between the middle school community the students experience everyday to the larger community served by the FBI. He addressed the negative outcomes of bullying and other types of negative behaviors and challenged the students to always set high standards for themselves and treat others with the same empathy they would like to receive. "FBI also stands for Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity," he explained. "We have to show integrity and compassion. If we do a good thing for a person, they remember."

Ms. Beovich challenged the students to practice good decision making as they look towards future careers. "One mistake and you will not be able to have many jobs, especially government jobs. Think about what you are doing and don't be tempted to make unwise decisions that can affect the rest of your life."
