Conor Sproat fends off his opponent (Freeport, NY) The 7-0-0 Garden City Flames (U-12) soccer team traveled south to Freeport to meet the 7-0-0 Freeport Red Storm on the afternoon of Saturday Nov. 1st. After a week of pump-up videos and inspirational speeches delivered via the Internet to each and every player, the Flames were looking forward to handing the Red Storm their first loss of the season while keeping their own record unblemished. It was a confident lot that descended on Red Storm Stadium in Freeport with hope in their hearts and fire in their feet.

Sadly, it was soon apparent that this was not to be Garden City's day. Instead, the day belonged to the Red Storm who, after a slow start, capitalized on Garden City mistakes to put the first of three goals past the GC 'keeper. As the Flames have learned, the better teams punish mistakes and the Freeport Red Storm was no exception. As the whistle sounded signaling the interval, the Flames found themselves at the bottom of a three nil hole. It was a hole they would not be able to dig themselves out of.

The second half started out promising better things, but a stubborn and skilled Freeport defense continually poured cold water on any of the Flames' scoring efforts. The GC defense tightened up as well and there were no goals scored in the second half, despite repeated calls from the Freeport support for, "mas golas, mas golas!"

"Man-of-the-Match" Nick Donner
"Man-of-the-Match" Nick Donner The Flames stood fast together and played bravely and with courage, but as the final whistle sounded, Freeport stood on the winning end of a 3-0 score. The result was a fair one and all of the lads look to build on the lessons learned from this loss. Congratulations to Man of the Match, Nick Donner. Your touch on the ball was superb and your positioning and anticipation were almost flawless. Despite the grim prospects you never backed off. The Flames prepare for their final match of the season vs. the Wantagh-Seaford Dominators. KO is at 10:50 AM at St. Paul's. Supporters welcome, good football played here! Laissez le bon temps roullez!
