After a tough loss 1-0 loss to the top-ranked Roosevelt Falcons on Saturday, the GC Warriors came back strong in the State Cup Quarterfinals against the Smithtown Gladiators on Sunday. GC had previously defeated Smithtown 5-1 in a regular scheduled game, and not unexpectedly, Smithtown came to the game looking to even the score. More ... Although the calendar had reached November the U15 FIRE were still playing baseball on a beautiful fall day this past Sunday. The FIRE closed the season on a strong note with a solid 15-2 and 13-2 double header sweep of the Long Island Bulls. The double header sweep ran the FIRE winning streak to 5 straight wins and 7 wins in the last nine games. More ... On Saturday November 1, the North Carolina State Wolfpack (Girls Division IV) completed an undefeated and untied season by defeating the tough Princeton Tigers 1-0 at St. Pauls. It was a beatuiful day for a game and both teams came well prepared and ready to play. More ... It was an exciting year for the spirited squad of seven year old soccer players coached by Jeff Coyle and Patrick Manley. Gone were the tee shirts with a variety of vivid colors which were replaced with new reversible jerseys. Real referees officiated on full fields instead of the coaches making the calls on half fields. More ... (Freeport, NY) The 7-0-0 Garden City Flames (U-12) soccer team traveled south to Freeport to meet the 7-0-0 Freeport Red Storm on the afternoon of Saturday Nov. 1st. More ... After posting a perfect 8-0 record for the regular season and decimating the L. I. Mustangs 14-0 in the playoffs, the Long Island Lightning won the Fall 2008 U 10 NCYAA baseball chamapionship on Saturday, October 25 at Salisbury Field Park, but it did not come easy. More ... The Garden City Wildcats traveled to I-Park last Saturday to face the New Hyde Park Lady Lions. This was a showdown for second place as the two sides were level on points in the Nassau Major league table. The one noticeable difference between the teams going into the match was the tremendous goal differential. GC's differential was +22 while NHP's stood at +5. More ... The Garden City Power U-12 Girls Travel Soccer team has two great wins on back to back weekends. On the weekend of October 25th the Power took on the Manhasset Meteors and came out on their home field ready to play. The winds were strong but the game went on escaping the rain. The Power did not need rain to cool down the Meteors they were able to do that all on their own. More ... The last fall weekend of Centennials Soccer led to a most exciting game for the girls of Team 6. Thanks to coaches Yvonne Varano and Brian Hegarty for passing on a love of the game. The girls came together and learned lots of new skills that they put to the test in every game. It was great to watch the girls play on the larger fields and hold their positions. More ... Lauren Miller (GCHS'97) finishes her first ING NYC MARATHON. Lauren, a second grade teacher at PS 51 in Manhattan, ran as a member of TEAM FOR KIDS. She raised over $3000 for the organization that promotes fitness in the public schools. More ... For the second time in three years, the Raynor sisters have won the Nassau County tennis doubles. The doubles draw at the Nassau County Championships on October 11-12 had the sister pair of Kelsey and Jacqueline Raynor as the top seed. The girls opened with a first round win against Miller and Paone from Manhasset. The first round was a ten game pro-set with the Raynors winning 10-1. More ... The GC U10 Shooting Stars have won their last two games against East Meadow and Syosset putting them in strong position to finish near the top of the division in their first year together, with one game remaining. Against East Meadow, the Shooting Stars won 3-0 behind a strong all around team effort. Meredith Aneser celebrated her birthday by opening the scoring for the Stars. More ... On Sunday October 19, the Garden City Pub Defectors defeated Leo's Pub in the Men's Over 35 Softball League Championship Game. The final score was 8-5 and closed another chapter in the incredible 8 year rivalry between the 2 teams. More ... Extra point conversions were added by Sal Ingrassia and James Buckley as the Thunder rolled over Franklin Square 26-0. The Maroon 8s have now had 11 different players cross the goal line this season. More ... The Garden City Thunder 8's had the opportunity to host "Friday Night Lights" at Community Park against the Baldwin Bombers. It was a beautiful, starry evening, with seasonal temperatures and no wind to speak of. In other words, it was a perfect night for Thunder football. We also welcomed back Liam Curtin, whose season long battle with infections was officially over. More ... The Holy Spirit/St. Anne's 2008 Cross Country Track Team scored big at the Brooklyn Queens Championships held this past Sunday at Alley Pond Park. The team placed First in Junior and Senior Girls, and Second in Junior Boys. An exciting photo finish win by Stephanie Gerland secured Third place for the Bantam girls, an extremely competitive division. More ... Last Sunday the Thunder O'Connor 7s traveled a few miles south to take on the Uniondale Knights. With daylight savings time coming to end it was thought the boys would be well rested for the 9AM battle that was to ensue. Little did they know that not only were their clocks turned back but so were their thermometers. This was by far the chilliest game to date! More ... This past Sunday morning the Garden City Thunder 7 year olds coached by Joe Scattareggia, Mike Sullivan, Craig Hungerford, Tim Schmitt and Dan Moscatiello traveled south to take on the Bulldogs of Long Beach at the Long Beach Middle School. With the wind coming off the Atlantic Ocean the boys took the field to play their final game of the 2008 season. More ... With a 3-0 victory over the Manhsset Indians, Garden City's field hockey team clinched their 15th straight county Class B title on Sunday afternoon, November 2nd. The first half was somewhat surprising for many Garden City fans as the Trojans had yet to score and a little over 12 minutes had already ticked away. More ... Garden City was coming off a 1-0 overtime win over Valley Stream North in the first round of the boys soccer playoffs when they met the Roslyn Bulldogs for a quarterfinal game on October 29th. The teams were evenly matched which became evident as the game played on with no score. However, with six minutes left and the score tied 0-0, Roslyn's Stephen Magray scored for the Bulldogs. More ... The Garden City JV football team finished its season with a 28-14 win over Calhoun on Saturday, November 1st. The win gave the Trojans a final record of 7-1, placing 2nd in the conference. More ... All season long Garden City High's junior quarterback Matt Montgomery had done a fine job of directing the offense. Most of the time that meant keeping the ball on the ground. In fact, Montgomery had averaged just nine passes per game. All of that changed last Saturday when he was called upon to rally the Trojans against a team with a huge defensive line. More ... The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct a Women's Platform Tennis Round Robin Program on Wednesday evenings. This program will begin on Wednesday, November 19th and will be held in two sessions in which the registrant has a choice of either Session I from 7 to 8:30 p.m. or Session II from 8:30 to 10 p.m. There will be a maximum of 4 players per court. On October 27, the U12 GC Xtreme were presented their 4 th consecutive Sportsmanship award for the Spring 2008 season by Long Island Junior Soccer League.
