What's Up For Young Adults BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Registration began Tuesday, October 7 for the Young Adult Babysitting workshop. Those who attend both sessions will be awarded a certificate of completion. Registration for the first session, First Aid/ Child Care, which was held on Tuesday, October 28, filled early the first day. An additional date is scheduled for December 17th, 3:45-5:45 PM. Those on the wait list get priority placement in this new class.
The second session, the safety session was held on Wednesday, November 5th . A second date is set for Tuesday, December 16th. The focus of the safety session is on how to keep the children and the babysitter out of harm's way and how to deal with any unavoidable accident or incident should one occur.
SCRAPBOOKING WORKSHOP
Christine Rissanen will be facilitating a scrapbooking workshop on Saturday, November 15th at 3 PM. This workshop should take 90 minutes. For those who have experience with this art form, skills will be refined. For novices basic techniques will be taught. For all, holiday themed pages will be produced and taken home. There is a limit of 20 participants so please register early. Registration began on Wednesday, October 29th. As always, one may register in person, by email at mkelly@gardencitypl.org or by phone.
TEEN 3 APPLES BOOK AWARD
October 20th was the closing date for The Teen 3 Apples Book Award Nominations. Thank you to all the Young Adults who nominated their favorite titles. Garden City's votes have been submitted to New York State. Watch for the finalist titles and the ballot box for the final voting.
DISCOVER THE YA COMPUTER CENTER
Use the printing coupons won at the Back to School Bash at the new YA Computer Center which is up and running. The newly renovated Young Adult Room houses a Computer Center exclusive for those patrons in Grades 6-12. There are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. Using this computer will insure company of peers only. Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased or credited with Summer Reading Club certificates at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
On December 3rd, a third Yak & Snack is planned. The book will be Fever 1793, a work of historical fiction focusing on the yellow fever outbreak. On December 10th, there will be the opportunity to learn Italic Calligraphy just in time to send out holiday cards.Registration for all YA programs may be done in person at the Young Adult desk, by phone to the Young Adult Librarian (516-742-8405) or by email tomkelly@gardencitypl.org.
