Members and spouses of the Col. Aaron Ogden Chapter: Front, L to R: Leslie Dimmling, Mary Poole, Roz Dorn, guest Mary McNulty. Rear, from left: Bruce Littlejohn, Roger Tillotson, Isabelle Smith, Arlene Kister, Peg Tillotson, June Fay. On October 8th, members of the Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, took a trip to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.
Members of the chapter enjoyed an escorted tour of the campus, as well as a lovely lunch in the Officers Club.
First on the tour was a visit to the Merchant Marine Museum, located in what was formerly a private home. The home was built in 1910 for William Barstow, an electrical engineer who became a partner of Thomas Edison and was later the first mayor of Kings Point. It has sweeping views of Long Island Sound. Among the many interesting artifacts were a detailed model ship collection, numerous oil paintings depicting the Merchant Marines at work, and a cup and saucer collection representing many different ships. In addition, there was a steering wheel from the USS Constitution on display.
L to R: The Museum guide and the Merchant Marine Escort. The museum tour was followed by a lovely buffet lunch.
This was an enlightening tour on a beautiful fall day, and a good time was had by all.
