Jane Austen Lecture At Community Club
Why do we still read Jane Austen? Barbara Hellering will attempt to answer this question in her discussion of Austen's life and the background of her time as major influences that shaped her novels. The program will take place at the Garden City Casino at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12 th under the auspices of The Community Club, it was announced by Prem Chauhan, Chairperson of the Drama/Literature Department. The lecture will consider the England of the 19 th Century, the Regency Period - its customs, costumes, the famous people of the day and the countryside with its stately mansions. Colorfully illustrated with many slides, Ms. Hellering will also emphasize the role of women in Austen's day and the necessity for marrying as well as one possibly could.
Ms. Hellering has spoken at national and regional meetings of the Jane Austen Society, at a number of local universities and has appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America."
