Socially Speaking

As I write this column, Election Day is two days away but as you read this it is all over and most folks are having a deep sigh of relief. Not because their candidate won, but because the campaigning is all over. It seems that the electioneering went on forever and in the last week I know that I had more automated phone calls for or against candidates that I knew and those that I had never heard of. The calls came all day (and evening) including both Saturday and Sunday. At least now I don't have to be afraid to answer the phone any more.

Last week seemed to be Bridge Week and this week it was a cultural week, a really pleasant change. It really started around October 14 th at the new Performing Arts Center at Adelphi University. Their performance of "In Search of A Goddess" was a tribute to dancer Ruth St. Denis who founded the Dance Department at Adelphi seventy years ago. This was followed a week later with the Department of Music's presentation of "Titans" featuring "Intrada Cubana" by Christoper Lynson Gee. It wasfollowed by Beethoven Piano Concerto with Symphony Orchestra titled "The Emperor" and Mahler's Symphony "Titan." They were both sellouts. Enjoying were: Prem Chauhan, Mary Polak, Grace Murphy, Joan Kuster, and our Mayor Peter Bee and his wife Marianne. Lydia Moringello , formerly of the Music Dept. of G.C. High was also there. This was followed by "All's Fair: Love, War and Politics" with James Carville and Mary Matalin that put things into a humorous perspective and was also a sellout.

Megan Belger spoke of her experiences as a Girls State Delegate to the members of the Ladies Auxiliary of our American Legion Post at its recent meeting. She said that she learned how the government is run. In both Girls State and Boys State, the programs simulate elections for government positions, such as President, Senator, or Representative in the House and then the successful candidates actually work at those positions for a week. David Kadamus was the Boys State Delegate and next month Elizabeth De Bold will be the Girls State Delegate in Brockport, N.Y. This is a great way for young folks coming into the workings of our government.

Speaking of our American Legion Post, I do hope that you will mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 11 th for the Veteran's Memorial Day Services at the 7 th Street Memorial next to the Library.
