Garden City faced Hewlett in the girl's soccer Class A first round playoff game on a beautiful, sunny, Friday afternoon October 24th at GCHS. GC's Jenna Zarou opened the scoring in the 13th minute, knocking in a loose ball created by Erin Donnelly. Emily Menges scored the game's deciding goal, heading in a corner kick from Christina Cesarini that put Garden City ahead 2-0 in the first half. Caroline Hohlman's high bouncer made it 3-0 and Michele Rotundo scored with a header into the net to give the Trojans their 4th goal and a 4-1 victory. In goal for the Trojans were Ashley Pratt who made one save and Kate Butcher who made two saves and allowed one goal. The victory advanced the Trojans to the quarterfinal game against the Bethpage Golden Eagles on Tuesday October 28th.
The conditions on the 28th were much different than what the Trojans had played in just four days earlier. It was a bitter, cold, wind driven, rainy day as both teams took the field. Garden City controlled most of the play during the first half and took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Katie Reilly. Bethpage answered back when Danielle Romano broke a 1-1 tie 20:00 into the second half. The Golden Eagles went on to win 4-1.
