Homework Help Now Offered
Mrs. Laura Wigger (right), of Garden City, helps a student with his homework at the new program sponsored by THE LIFE Church.
"I love this help with my homework," Naomi said. "It helps me understand it better." Naomi, age 10, is one of 50 students currently participating in the Homework Help program at THE LIFE Christian Church in Old Westbury. The new program began this fall to offer children in grades 3, 4, and 5 with an afternoon each week for supervised homework help and activities to nurture their academic and physical health.
Each Thursday afternoon, from 2:30 to 6 p.m., the multi-purpose room at THE LIFE comes alive for children to gather in small groups of two or three with an adult volunteer to do their homework. It's a learning opportunity, as well as an opportunity to build friendships. The adults answer questions, encourage the children to complete their assignments, and offer explanation where a child needs extra help.
Vicar Justin Vetrano, the lead minister at THE LIFE, explains that the program is offered free of charge to children from two elementary schools in the Westbury School District. "A dedicated team of over 20 adult volunteers, many with teaching degrees, give time one afternoon each week to assist the children with their homework assignments, help with games and activities, and prepare and serve snacks, " he said. "After the children complete their homework, there are a wide variety of activities they can choose to attend-drama, singing, cooking, reading, or crafts. Our goals are to assist children with their academic needs as well as give them a safe, fun environment that feeds their mind, body, and soul."
Laura Bauer, Director of the Homework Help program at THE LIFE, found an immediate need within the Westbury community. "With the help of the Westbury Schools, who also worked out bussing for the children to our facility, we accepted 50 children into the program," she reported. "With a waiting list of several more children, we are hoping to expand the program by offering additional times during the week."
Pastor Jeff Browning, pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Garden City, also helps kids with their homework there. He commented, "We are thrilled to be a part of this community and to be able to meet a need for children and families in Westbury."
