Violence Against Women - The Global Epidemic
Dr. Sheila Dauer, director of the Women's Human Rights Program of Amnesty International USA, will speak about violence against women, on Sunday, December 7 at 11 am at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, New York.
Violence against women remains a worldwide epidemic. The UN Development Fund for Women estimates that up to one in three women globally will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime with rates reaching 70 percent in some countries. Amnesty International launched a campaign to stop violence against women worldwide four years ago. In 2008, AIUSA joined with Family Violence Prevention Fund and Women Thrive Worldwide to help Sen. Joseph Biden formulate the International Violence against Women Act, which he introduced with Rep. Richard Lugar last October. Dr. Dauer will review issues in violence against women and tell how the International Violence Against Women Act could significantly help end it globally.
The presentation, which is free, is sponsored by Amnesty International Group 74.
