My how time flies! I hope you can read this between answering your door bell and greeting the trick or treaters. Let us hope that it is all treats. The following week brings more treats, especially for the creative shopper. Tomorrow there will be a giant yard (lawn) sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the great lawn of the Cathedral of the Incarnation - Saturday, Nov. 1 st - rain or shine, but let's hope for shine.,
This will be followed by Election Day on November 4 th and I do hope that you vote early (but not often) and then enjoy the Election Day Fair at the Garden City Community Church. You will enjoy all the usual crafts, holiday items, trash or treasure, jewelry, childrens toys and much, much more. You can also rest your feet while you enjoy the traditional delicious lunch on the lower level of the church where you can bid on the very special items. All in all, a very good day.
All in all , October was a very active bridge month in Garden City. The Helen Keller Bridge led off the month and was followed by the Chrysanthemum Bridge with both held at the Community Church - on different days of course. The Garden City Country Club's Ladies Luncheon Bridge came next with a full house as did each of the preceding ones. There were thirty two tables in play that afternoon and the first small slam was dealt, bid, and made by Joy Losgar and Dorothy Alford in 6 hearts. The door prize that afternoon was won by Yiota Frezza . The next bridge at the club will be held on Thursday, November 20th.
The Cherry Valley Club held its Dinner/Bridge on October 15 th and there were 20 tables in play that evening. The first small slam was made by Virginia Sanossian and Adrienne Zannos in 6 hearts. A grand slam was made in 7 spades by Marilyn Rocne and Pat Dolan and the door prizes were won by Nancy Wagner and Jane Bernadino. The date of the next bridge was announced by Bridge Chairman George Rivara as Wednesday, Nov. 12th.
The Casino Ladies Lunch/Bridge was held on Tuesday, October 21 st and they too had a sell out crowd. Among those enjoying the afternoon were Mary Allis, Joan Jordan, Dee DeVries, Blanche Muller, and Ruth Brown and Sue Hall. All were happy to catch up on who went where during the summer and what they could plan for the holidays.
Miriam Benack missed that day at the Casino as her daughter arrived from the West Coast to spend the week with Mom and to celebrate Miriam's birthday. What a nice idea.
Pat Dolan and Marie Kelly are chairing the Luncheon/Card Party for the St. Joseph's Rosary Altar Society. It will be held at the Orchid Restaurant on Franklin Ave, Garden City from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 13 th. The cost is $30 per person. Reservations to Pat Dolan at 100 Hilton Ave. Apt. 304, or to Marie Kelly at 27 Clinton Ave. Garden City. Make payable to St. Joseph's Rosary Altar Society.
St. Anne's Church will host a Dessert Card Party on the 14 th of Nov., a Friday, at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 per person and all are welcome. I don't think I have ever seen so many bridges and so many busy ladies working on them. I wonder how they can keep their hands straight?
Happy birthday wishes go to Jim Mercadante who will be doing his celebrating on November 9 th. May you have a wonderful day and a year filled with good health and much happiness with many more years to come.
I have heard that Marye Heston had surgery on her hand in the past week. Get well cards would be a boost to her. Marye is President of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead and is a very busy lady. I know that we all wish her well. Those cards really do help.
Walter Engels, a retired Financial Advisor with Smith Barney, will be the speaker at the Thursday, November 6 th meeting of the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. It will be held in the G.C. Library at 1:30 p.m. and, given the financial situation today, it will be of great importance to all. Walter also had a program on the local radio station about financial matters and he is well known here in town. He also served as President of the G.C. Library Board and was a past President of the Community Fund of G.C. You know what they say about busy people. Good work, Walter.
Again, don't forget to vote on Election Day and I will see you next week.
