Gaby Barcklow, Colleen Logan, Coach Anne Sullivan, Megan Zarriello and Sarah Schlichte after winning the 400 freestyle relay. Remember the excitement and admiration the USA felt as Jason Lezak out touched Alain Bernard of France at the wall to win the 400 freestyle relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics? Well, everyone attending the Long Beach meet this past Friday experienced the same feeling as sophomore Megan Zarriello, swimming a personal best time of 54.8 seconds, made up over a body length of time in the last leg of the 400 freestyle relay to win the race and the meet. Garden City and Long Beach are long time rivals and with Garden City up by only four points before the last event Coach Anne Sullivan knew they needed a first place finish to win the meet. As a result of their outstanding performances, relay members Sarah Schlichte, Colleen Logan, Gaby Barcklow and Megan Zarriello won the event and in doing so keep the team's seventh straight season winning streak alive and made the team Conference Champions. Leading up to this victory though Coach Anne Sullivan once again worked her magic and incredible coaching skills to get the most out of the girls knowing that every point counted. Sarah Schlichte swam a personal best in the 200 freestyle to qualify for the state championships. In fact nine girls swam their personal best times of the season: Colleen Logan (200 freestyle), Kelly McGrath (200 IM), Olivia Raimonde (100 butterfly), Megan Zarriello and Gaby Barcklow (100 freestyle), Sarah Schlichte, Colleen Logan and Natasha Senken (500 freestyle), Jenna DeAngelo (100 breastroke) and Megan Zarriello and Marie Clarkson (100 backstroke). Even though this was the last meet of the regular season the girls still have the Long Beach Invitational this Saturday, Division Championships the week of October 27th and County Championships on November 5th, 7th and 8th when the team will compete for their 10th straight county championship. Good Luck to the girls and Coach Anne Sullivan and thanks for such an exciting season.
