The Chargers began the tournament on Saturday by playing the West Hartford Storm. Despite a gallant effort, Garden City was defeated by a score of 3 to 1. In the second game, the Chargers bounced back with an impressive 1 to 0 victory over the Windsor Wildcats. In this contest, the Chargers scored early and managed to hold on to the lead in a well played match where consistent teamwork and a solid defense enabled Garden City to be victorious. The Chargers ended the first day with a solid 1 and 1 record.
On Sunday, the Chargers faced the Shelton Sabotage. From the onset, Garden City controlled the match, exhibiting strong passing and a superb defense. The Chargers won the game 2 to 0. Next up, the formidable Massapequa Lightning. In an extremely physical game, Massapequa scored two quick goals, taking a 2 to 0 lead in the first 7 minutes. However, from that point forward, the Chargers dominated the contest and outplayed the Lightning in all facets of the game. Despite their efforts, Massapequa's keeper continually denied the Chargers' numerous scoring attempts, ending in a 2 to 0 loss. In spite of the score, the girls emerged with a moral victory as they matched the physical play of Massapequa and never gave up regardless of the early 2 to 0 deficit.
In their final game of the weekend, the Chargers played Glastonbury United in an 8 A.M. Monday morning contest. Utilizing the lessons learned from the prior four games, coupled with some musical inspiration from Mr. Humbert, Garden City scored early and dominated this game from start to finish. The Chargers were victorious in a 5 to 0 win. The Chargers finished the tournament with a solid 3 and 2 record and a fantastic experience.
Thanks again to Coaches Clarke, Schroeder and Archer and all of the parents for their hard work and support. Congratulations to the girls for their stellar soccer performance and excellent display of sportsmanship! Way to go Chargers!
