On Wednesday, October 16th, Garden City Volunteer Firefighters provided fire protection to the north campus of Hofstra University, including the Mack Sports Complex for second alarm response, during the final Presidential Debate that was televised worldwide from the university. Garden City Volunteer firefighters provide a crew of firefighters and a tower ladder truck for eight hours that day and evening.
Garden City Volunteer Firefighters were assigned to a Task Force of one engine, one mini-pumper, one tower ladder and two ambulance units and were stationed on the North Campus. Joint fire operations were with the Uniondale Fire Department, North Merrick Fire Department and the Garden City Fire Department for the North Campus Task Force. In addition, other area volunteer fire department units were deployed in other zones to provide fire and emergency medical response as well. According to Chief James Meehan, "it was an honor and privilege to be a part of the primary response fire team at this historic event. Our volunteer firefighters are always glad to assist our neighboring departments in any capacity when they need help; it's what we call mutual aid."

The Garden City Fire Department rotated two crews of volunteer firefighters for the event, one crew covering the afternoon and early evening hours, and the second crew covering the evening and night hours until after the debate was completed and the candidates safely out of the area. Garden City Volunteer Firefighters were also on standby assignment in Garden City Fire Headquarters with one pumper to cover the northern most portion of the Uniondale Fire District.
