With Athena

Well, the dogwoods have exited stage left and now it's the turn of the sugar maple trees to put on their show. I really do wish we had more of them. There is another tree with bright yellow leaves starting to turn and they, too, are lovely. One problem that I see around town is that we are losing many of our white birch trees that started late this past summer. You might think of talking to Mike Didyk about this. He is our Village Arborist so do it before you plant another one as it will save you both time and money.

Marilyn Camp asked me to tell you that they can still accommodate a couple of tables for the Sunday, October 26 th Octoberfest at the Senior Center. It runs from noon to 5 with a full German menu on tap along with beer and wine. At $25 per person, you just can't do better so mail your check to W. B. T. Post 265, P.O. Box 8, Garden City, N.Y. 11530. There is also bridge afterward, so bring your own cards. For more information call 248-8472.

There is a lot going on at Adelphi University Sunday, November 2 nd at 3 p.m. the Friends of the Adelphi University Library will present Elizabeth Keller-Dimin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a talk on the "New Greek and Roman Galleries." Admission is free and the lecture is open to the public. Parking is free and available and there will be a drawing for free family passes to the Metropolitan Museum. Come and enjoy.

Things were also jumping at the performance of "In Search of A Goddess" at the new Performing Arts Center on the Adelphi campus and the performance was truly wonderful. Among the G.C. residents attending this past Friday were Mayor Peter Bee and his wife Marianne , both of whom had only raves to say about the performance. The parking was also good as they have a new underground parking facility so more fields are open now.

The Helen Keller Bridge was also a sell-out recently and you will be seeing the pictures to prove it. Attending were Peggy Mumm, Gloria Tasone, Irene Christie and her daughter Linda, Trudy Anderson also had her daughter Carolyn as a guest, and Paula Rega. Everyone was having a good time for a good cause.

Ginny Fortney spent a lovely fall day lunching with former G. C. residents Barbara Wilson, Dorothy Holl and Marjorie Tonsmeire at Peconic Landing in Greenport. Barbara, who is a Master Gardener and Ginny then visited a number of nurseries where they selected some spectacular autumn plants. All three ladies, as well as Dan and Priscilla Duff, are now enjoying a lot of activities out on the North Fork.

Happy birthday wishes go to Maggie Battista and Adele Raffo who will be celebrating their special days as October winds down and also to Florence Dieterich, who will be celebrating on Halloween. May all the ladies have a wonderful day and a year full of health and happiness and, in the case of Florence, all treats and no tricks.

Happy anniversary wishes to Pat and Jerry Sheehan and Fran and Dick Costello as they celebrate their weddings and also to Celeste and Lawrence Murphy, who celebrate their special day on the 26 th of this month. All the best to all the happy couples and many more years ahead for all of you.

October Fest is in the air and Jane MacDougall and Eleanor Marshall enjoyed partaking of it at the home of Christine Hanson , President of the Auxiliary of the Garden City Community Church. From all reports, it was a fun-filled evening of fellowship, good cheer, and a treat all around. Chris is also the President of Twigs and will be deeply involved in the upcoming annual Golden Goose Gala on Thursday, November 20 th. The Gala and Candlelight House Tour, along with two days of boutique shopping will benefit Winthrop University Hospital and the Maternal Child Care and Nursery Units. Good for you, Chris, a busy lady gets things done.

Our thought for this week is: junk is something you've kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it. See you next week.
