The Waldorf School of Garden City is proud to announce the dedication of its newly renovated library, renamed The Miller Library, in honor of alumni parent and former Trustee, John Miller, and former faculty member and current Trustee, Kristin Miller. The dedication ceremony took place on Thursday, October 2nd at the Waldorf School's annual Benefactors Reception. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, open to the entire community and celebrating the re-opening of the Library, will take place on Saturday, October 25th at 11:00 a.m. as part of the Waldorf School's Fall Fair and Alumni Day festivities. A warm and inviting center for the community, The Miller Library was designed to "nurture the imaginations of young children, while meeting the technological and resource needs of the School's older students and faculty", said current Board Chairman, William J. Jennings. As the focal point of the School's recent Capital Campaign, the Library renovation nearly doubles the size of this important space, which is located at the heart of the School.

In 2004, John Miller and Kenneth I. Chenault '69 served as Chairman and Honorary Chairman, respectively, of Opening Worlds of Opportunity: a Campaign for the Waldorf School of Garden City, which raised funds to upgrade School facilities, increase Scholarship & Endowment Funds, and refurbish facilities at Glen Brook - the Waldorf School's 250-acre farm campus located in Marlborough, New Hampshire. "This Capital Campaign represents the single largest investment in the School since its founding in 1947 and would not have been possible without the ongoing support and dedication of our entire Waldorf School community," said School's Administrator Susan Braun.

A founding member of Arterial Vascular Engineering, John Miller is also the Chairman of Hofstra University's Board of Trustees. Kristin Miller, a current trustee at the Waldorf School, taught at the School from 2001 until 2006. Kenneth I. Chenault '69 is an alumnus of the Waldorf School of Garden City and a founding member of the School's Board of Trustees. He is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express Company. At the dedication ceremony, Waldorf Board Chairman, William J. Jennings noted, "both John and Ken brought leadership and generosity to this historic Campaign, enabling the School to exceed its fundraising goal by 35% and making possible the many improvements to our campus."

The Miller Library was designed by the architectural firm of Bentel & Bentel, Architects/Planners AIA. "Our goal in designing the library was to respect the existing architecture while adding something appropriate and new to the context. The exterior courtyard has long been loved by the Waldorf community and we did not want to harm this space, but embrace it. We added five "pavilion" rooms to the library with lots of windows, so the students and faculty feel as if they are in the garden. Each "pavilion" is treated separately with autumn colors so they are easily identified. Maple wood and sustainable materials were also used." Based in Locust Valley, Bentel & Bentel has received both international and national recognition and their work currently spans the globe from Europe to North America to Asia.
