Well, we all saw the fashions for fall in the magazines and newspapers and they certainly are different. There was one cocktail dress that I would really think long and hard about buying, but then I saw the price - $6,400. While there may be some who would be willing to pay that price, I am not one of them and I don't know anyone who would either. The rest of the styles would probably never be seen at any of the lovely parties and affairs here in Garden City. Our ladies believe in fashion, but not in wearing something because it has a certain name or because it is head-turning. The runway fashions are meant to turn heads and that is about all as I have never seen any of these styles at any affairs I have been to. It really makes you wonder why they would make and show these styles that few if any would buy and not make and show those styles we would all like to buy.

Here in Garden City you can see fall on every block as the trees are turning - especially the dogwoods - and pumpkins and ghosts and goblins are making their annual appearance. Clark Gardens held its Fall Plant Sale recently and they had a wonderful turnout of both shoppers and helpers. In the latter category we had Marilou Pfeiffer, Dian Kendrick, and Virginia Musantre. They had an Attic Treasures section that drew a good deal of attention.

The District (Long Island) Conference for the American Association of University Women will be held on October 18th at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue. Joan Stafford is the Interbranch Representative from Garden City and played a pivotal role in the history of A.A.U.W. on Long Island. Joan will have a lot of information to bring back to the Garden City Branch members. Way to go, Joan.

Weddings were on tap for several couples here in town and both were held in Florida. Blanche and Don Muller were in Florida to attend their grand-daughter's wedding and Elizabeth and Charles Dunleavy were also in Florida for a family wedding.

Happy birthday wishes go to Miriam Benack who will blow out the candles on her cake on the 21st, and to Joan Typermas, who will be celebrating just about this time also.

For the gentlemen, we have Edward Kenney who celebrated on October 7th and James Donoghue, who will celebrate on the 18th of October. May all the happy celebrants have a wonderful day and a year filled with good health and much happiness with many more to come.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Jackie and Bill Polon, who will celebrate on the 21st of this month and may they have many more years of wedded bliss to enjoy in good health and happiness.

Don't forget to get your reservations in for the CMF Fall Card Party and Boutique on Monday, October 27th. Mail your check for $18 to Patrice Giordano at 312 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, N.Y. 11530. It's getting close and you don't want to miss it.

The fall season or the Community Club started out with a big bang with their Friendship Luncheon which was a sell out. This was followed by its opening program on "Campaign Songs of the 19th Century" which was so appropriate for our 2008 upcoming elections. Following up all this was their program on "A Rockette Remembers" held at the Garden City Library to a standing room only crowd. Prem Chauhan introduced the speaker Corliss Fyfe Whitney and those enjoying the "high kicks" were Ida and Jennie Catania, Anne Daly, Regina Dowling, Barbara Flanagan, Marge Goldsmith, asnd Sally and George Papoulas. The Community Club will be celebrating its 90th anniversary during the 2009-2010 season.

The Women's Club of the Garden City Country Club will be holding its final meeting of the season with a dinner to follow on Wednesday, October 22nd. President Eileen Caruso has done a wonderful job and so has her Board. Eileen and her husband Vincent also did well on the golf course, placing in many winner's circles.

The Friends of the Adelphi University Library will be hosting their November speaker - Elizabeth Kessler of Metropolitan Museum of Art with a talk on "Greek and Roman Art At The Met" on Sunday, November 2nd at 3 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. Admission is free and you are cordially invited to attend.

Our thoughts for the week is: Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is the day. See you next week.
