Children Run Voter Registration Drive

This fall the children and teens of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island (located in Garden City) hosted a voter registration drive at the Stop & Shop in Carle Place. Besides creating an opportunity for people to register, the event gave kids an up-close look at citizenship in action. While most shoppers were proud to say that they were already registered and eager to vote, some people needed to register a new address or name change. Several people picked up absentee ballots for their college-aged children.
When asked what he learned from the experience, Gabriel Stanley, 10, of Westbury, said, "I thought the voter registration drive was fun! I really liked it. My favorite part was registering people to vote and working with the other kids." Reid Hetzel of Floral Park, also 10, said, "It was fun experiencing how it works." Eric Morgenstern, 10, of Bayside, said, "we did a good deed." Thanks go to Mr. George Cinis, manager of the Stop & Shop, who supported this project.
