Garden City FIRE Baseball Rolls on into October

Under the lights on a damp cool fall night, the U9 FIRE baseball team squared off against LSW Red this past weekend. LSW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and it would have been an even bigger lead if not for the outstanding catch in centerfield by Kenny McCadden to get the third out. The FIRE fought back hard in the bottom of the first. Patrick Iorio, Jack Kenny, Thomas Gillespie, Kyle Ober and Quinn Walsh all reached base safely before an out was recorded. Thomas Gillsepie stole home to tie the score at 3-3. The FIRE loaded the bases in the second behind the hitting of Brendan McGuire, Kenny McCadden and John Schlatter but LSW managed to get out of the jam. LSW took the lead again in the top of the third, but catcher, Dan Salsberg made an outstanding catch in foul territory keeping LSW from scoring even more. In the bottom of the third the FIRE crept closer when Christopher Kiley walked and stole, second, third and home.

In the middle innings of the game the FIRE also had solid fielding from John Schlatter who made two excellent plays, Jack Kenny staying with a deflected ball, and key outs recorded by Cole Flynn and Richard Maronney. Brendan McGuire's pitching in the forth and the fifth kept the FIRE close and John Griffith and Andrew Nagel both stole home in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-6 but the FIRE couldn't get closer then that and ultimately lost to the undefeated LSW red team. The FIRE season rolls on under the lights again this Friday night.
