GC Thunderbolts Edge Terryville

2008-10-10 / Sports

The U-14 Thunderbolts are back on track again as they won their second game in a row last Sunday. An artful header by Matt Greco clipped the left post before hitting the back of the net in the first half. Throughout the game, Marc Schwendenmann, Nick Angora, Brian Pratt, Danny McCabe, Jack Metzler and Jake Menges kept the pressure on their opponents with offensive barrages. Schwendenmann in particular showed incredible hustle each and every time the ball fond its way into his zone.

At Midfield, Kyle Ritchie, Mike Perrotta, Mike Caravella, Pat Keogh and and Kyle Walsh made tremendous efforts, both defensively and offensively as they wore the talented Terryville squad down. The boys stepped up to compensate for the void created by the absence of Brian Defliese and Zane Wasp who were instrumental in the win against POB the week before.

While each team member that played defense was instrumental at shutting down the home team offense, Joe Randazzo shined once again with his size, work ethic and incredible "field smarts" as he broke up play after play and communicated with his keepers.

Between the pipes, first half goalie Mike Lemonda made a very aggressive save as he kicked away a shot that looked destined to be the tying goal. He has adjusted well to his new position and is well composed under pressure. The game became far more physical in the second half for the entire team. Second half net keeper Tyler Biscone was also the target of hungry strikers looking to even up the score. Like Lemonda, Biscone rejected each and every attempt. Perhaps the most impressive pair of saves came on a breakaway from three yards off of the left pipe which was rejected with two palms giving the striker an opportunity for a rebound which Tyler proceeded to dive on and smother just before the striker landed on his torso.

The 1-0 victory improved the team's record to better than .500 average in regular season games and gave them two wins in a row. Based upon their recent success, the Thunderbolts should be charged up for Windsor this weekend. As this will be their last year at the Columbus Day Weekend event in Connecticut, let's hope it is a memorable one for the boys. Go Thunderbolts!
