A Word From The Publisher

The Garden City Board of Trustees met last Thursday night and heard comment on the AvalonBay proposal for St. Paul's. The Board hopes to make a final decision on the project by the end of the year.

On the national front, the country is also in the midst of a heated, emotional debate over who should lead us for the next four years. The diffference is that by the end of the year that decision will be over and done with for certain, while the St. Paul's saga will continue long after.

To put it in perspective, the nation will have been through four presidential election cycles in the time it has taken Garden City to come to a consensus on St. Paul's - if indeed a consensus is reached this year.

Whether or not the board comes to a decision, there are still several large hurdles to be passed, namely the removal of the parkland designation on the property by the State Legislature and any possible lawsuits that might be brought against the Village. On top of that, the national economic news has been dire, and no one seems to know what will happen in the housing and lending markets, of which AvalonBay is a part.

These certainly are interesting times!

Congratulations to the Adelphi students who produced and performed in "Rent" at the new Adelphi University Performing Arts Center. The gala performance on Saturday night was polished and professional and the students should be very proud of themselves. Dance and music galas are planned as well.
